Hybrid Jini for Limited Devices
نویسندگان
چکیده
We envision a future of heterogeneous mobile devices collaborating spontaneously and bringing convenience to life. Taking a practical approach, we study the feasibility of integrating limited devices into the Jini, Java, and Linux paradigm. With careful evaluation and system hacking, we manage to fit the software stack, excluding Java’s Remote Method Invocation (RMI) support, in a small 1.85-Mbyte space. However, we also identify that including RMI support will exhaust all the remaining space. We propose, as a short-term solution, to re-implement Jini with light-weight communication alternatives and to use a hybrid lookup server to inter-operate RMIand nonRMI-supported devices. For the long term, we advocate minimalism and call for community-wide standardization effort to the system software development.

Pini - A Jini-Like Plug&Play Technology for the KVM/CLDC
The Jini technology provides an infrastructure for spontaneous networking of devices based on Java-classes and interfaces. With the help of Jini, small devices with minimal resources should be able to join such infrastructures. Due to the fact that Jini is based upon RMI (Remote Method Invocation) and is therefore on top of RMI, it is impossible to Jini-enable these limited devices: the use of ...
متن کاملReaching out to the Cell Phone with Jini
Jini has made considerable inroads as an enterprise computing platform, but it hasn't fulfilled its promise as an ubiquitous computing platform for thin-clients. A roadblock has been that full participation in a Jini community requires devices to support a fully capable Java virtual machine, something that is a challenge for mobile devices (e.g., cellphones). The Jini Surrogate specification ai...
متن کاملJini for Ubiquitous Devices
The objective of this work is to reduce the code size and runtime of Jini and Java so the entire system software stack fits in the limited ROM/RAM space of a ubiquitous device. Having identified the size bottleneck being the use of RMI and unnecessary functionalities in the context of ubiquitous devices, we 1) propose to exchange service description instead of service proxy between the lookup s...

Dynamic delivery of network/web services across platforms/technologies will provide leverage of existing investment, scalability, and promote interoperability. In this research we envision a number of hybrid wireless terminal devices/nodes with at least one device/node bridge (called base station or access point) between the air and a physical wired network hosting a number of server applicatio...
متن کاملA Framework for the Integration of Legacy Devices into a Jini Management Federation
The administration of heterogeneous networks with many devices is a tedious and time-consuming task. Today’s approaches only provide static configuration files and make the addition and removal of devices a manual chore. In this paper we present a framework for the integration of legacy devices based on Jini, Sun Microsystem’s new technology for federating network devices and services. We intro...
